I am taking credit for these watches. I met with Time & Gems a while ago when seeing their progress with DLC and PVD treatments on Rolex Submariner Movement Replica watch modifications, and suggested that they give a two tone “Rolesor” watch this type of treatment. Black and gold is a very nice combo, (especially yellow gold and black), and to be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Rolex mod that did this (though I could be wrong). So what Time & Gems did is black DLC coat the steel portions of these watches, and leave the gold parts of the watch and the dials alone. DLC is a very hard coating and is becoming favored to PVD at many brands. Time & Gems seems to confused the term DLC and PVD – and they seem to use them both. You can read more about the watch on their blog here. So unless I am missing something, these watches are DLC coated, not PVD. Pardon their confusion.
Among the ironies of Rolex is the pieces most popular to watch lovers are not the pieces that Rolex sells the most of. Request a “watch guy” what the greatest Rolex watch is and many of us will point to something in the “Oyster Professional” group, such as a Submariner or even GMT-Master (among others). Ask Rolex where a lot of the earnings comes from, and they will tell you something completely different. From a company perspective, Rolex will reveal that Datejusts, especially women’s models with diamonds, are the most well-known products in their collection. So yes, watch fans and “the general public” have different watch tastes. That’s something I’ve known for quite a long time, and perhaps something which I will explore more later on. Having said that, brands like Rolex, Omega, and TAG Heuer – which do not strictly survive on sales from watch lovers – yet continue to give a huge range of watches that greatly appeal to people. And when there is one watch that I can think of that both appeals to the watch enthusiast as well as also the general public, it is the famed Rolex Submariner.Last year that I wrote a review of this Rolex Submariner watch here. That review was really for the Rolex Submariner ref. 114060 (the version in this article) as well as the ref. 116610. What’s the difference between both of these versions? The date. Even the ref 116610 is technically known as the Submariner Date, but since it’s the more popular of both models, often it’s just called the Submariner, while the ref.
Time & Gems likes to work with pre-owned Rolex watches as a way of breathing life back into them. I think both the Daytona “Black Gold” and the Submariner “Black” gold came out nicely. It would also look good to a GMT Master II in this style.
The video where you can see the watches has a pretty ridiculous sound track. I mean I get that the watches are important to them, but there is a fine line between self-promotion and self-important. So just ignore the “biblical” tone of the music. No pricing information has been released yet, but I will try to update the post when it is.
